Andy's Recommendation of the week :

Two Caravans
by Marina Lewycka

Ukrainian born Lewycka is a resident of Sheffield and in 2005 brought is the amazingly title "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian" winning the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize as well as a number of other awards.

Two caravans was released in 2007 and tells the story of a number of migrant workers living in rural Britain. The plight of these people is often overlooked but this book tells the human story of the lives and asperations of these people. The book also highlights the disgusting jobs many workers do and the dangers from gang leaders that they face.

Len's Recommendation of the week :

Klaxons
Myths of the near future

This is this years Mercury Prize winner from KLAXONS. Their debut album defies categorisation. HMV attempted a definition describing it as “acid-rave sci-fi punk-funk”. I would see it as a sort of postmodern take on 90s rave culture. A stand out track is the single “Its Not Over yet” a cover of the 1995 dance anthem by Grace. Named after a short story collection by Brit sci-fi author J.G Ballard Myths of the near future is out on Polydor now.

Bob Kirkpatrick – I hate the rain

Folk singer songwriter with two albums available. Started in the folk clubs in the Midlands and moved to Dorset, where folk music is alive and thriving.

Ethereal – This is rome

Ethereal is breaking away from the progressive rock sound of her debut album, Mythillogical and penning her lyrics to a darker, more gothic sound on her upcoming album, Albatross. Ethereal began as a poet and her muse grew into a more lyrical style when she joined a cover band in 2002 as a back-up singer. The band barely made it out of the garage before she decided to begin writing her own songs. Three years later, she released her debut album Mythillogical under the Myopicat Records label. After a falling out with her label, Ethereal decided to take the opportunity to explore the realms of trance and electronica, a sound that had been driving her for years. Now, working with musician and talented mixer, Terrence Town, formerly of Rosewater Elizabeth, Ethereal has been able to blend her thought-provoking lyrics to the sound she’s always wanted.
